1999 PRESCRIPTION DRUG DATA
Let's try to get some control on this while you can!

 In 1999:

  • There were 270 millions prescriptions dispensed.
  • 160 Million were for Patented Prescriptions or 59%
  • 110 Million were for Generic or 41%
Total Cost of All Prescriptions in 1999:
  • $8.3 Billion
  • $7.1 Billion for Patented
  • $1.2 Billion for Generic
  • Percentage Share:
    •  85% of all costs for Patented
    • 15% of all costs for Generic

These are very staggering figures considering that 59% of all prescriptions now account for 85% of all costs.

I feel that it is imperative we make sure that your benefit plans use generic drugs.  Especially considering in many cases, the generic and the brand name drugs are run in the same plant, at the same time. Then they are just labelled differently by the manufacturer.

If the projected population distribution in year 2020, were applied today, an extra 17 billion of cost would result. The private sector would be responsible for 12 billion of that cost.  THAT IS YOU!
